AmCham Cyprus on May 15 also took part at the Economic Diplomacy Brunch, held as an exclusive side event during the Reflect Festival and organised by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Reflect Festival. An event which brought together public officials, foreign representatives, bilateral business association leaders and select private-sector guests to explore opportunities and challenges in cross-border business and innovation.
AmCham Cyprus moderated the two Panel Discussions that took place during the event.
Panel 1: Business Perspectives: “From the Ground Up: Breaking Into and Beyond Cyprus’s Business Landscape”, with Panellists:
► Maria Terzi – Co-founder & CEO, Malloc, an AI cybersecurity startup tackling data recording on mobile devices.
► Sergey Osipov – Co-founder, Placy, an AI-driven real estate platform.
► Christian Gihr – CEO, SC Silver, an IT consulting and solutions company.
Panel 2: Public Sector Perspectives: “Bilateral Business Through a Public Lens: Views on Cross-Border Opportunities and Risks”, with Panellists:
► H.E., Mr. Martin Hagstrom: Ambassador of Sweden.
► H.E., Mr. Michael Tatham: British High Commissioner.
► H.E., Ms. Clelia Chevrier Kolacko: Ambassador of France
► Mr. Shane Siegel: Deputy Chief of Mission, US Embassy.
During the first Panel, the seasoned business professionals shared candid, on-the-ground insights into what it takes to establish or grow a business in or from Cyprus or using Cyprus as a key element in the value chain. Through real-world case studies, they unpacked the nuts and bolts of entering Cyprus as a foreign company or scaling businesses into international markets, with a focus on tech-driven sectors like healthtech, fintech, or AI. They shared their experience in navigating Cyprus’s or foreign markets’ regulatory landscape or tapping into its talent pool, on any unexpected hurdles (e.g., bureaucracy, market size, or logistics) they faced and the way they overcame them.
Reflecting on the business leaders’ insights from Panel 1, the esteemed panellists of Panel 2 discussed how these dynamics play out from a diplomatic and policy standpoint. They offered their views on navigating regulatory frameworks, leveraging Cyprus’s tech ecosystem, and overcoming market barriers. They explored as to how their countries perceive Cyprus as a gateway to EU and regional markets or a tech hub and what public-sector experiences align with or differ from the business challenges discussed.
Through real-world examples, such as trade initiatives or investment partnerships, the panellists highlighted the mutual benefits of bilateral ties—such as increased foreign direct investment (FDI), innovation exchanges, and market access—, discussed the opportunities and challenges of cross-border business and innovation, shared their views as to what businesses need from policy makers in the future and explored ideas and initiatives that can be undertaken for Cyprus and partner countries to mutually benefit as hubs for economic growth, innovation and wellbeing, laying the groundwork for future collaboration.
